Can I use a 9 speed chain on a 10 speed cassette?

Can I use a 9 speed chain on a 10 speed cassette?

In some cases, a 9-speed chain may work just fine with a 10-speed cassette. In general, however, running a chain designed for fewer speeds than the cassette is not considered a good practice. The 9-speed chain is wider and can rub and skip when combined with a 10-speed cassette.

Is there a difference between a 9 and 10 speed chain?

The main difference between a 9 speed chain and a 10 speed chain is that the 10 speed chain is thinner in width, because of the 10 speed cassette, which in turn means the chain is lighter.

Are 9 and 10 speed cassettes the same width?

For the Shimano brand, their 9-speed cassettes have an extra cog added to the 8-speed cassette, while the overall width remains the same. The same thing goes for the 10-speed where it still has the same width as an 8-speed cassette. This makes the 10-speed slightly narrower.

Which is better 9 speed or 10 speed?

Depending on what manufacturer you go for, 10 speed is usally only one more speed than a 9 speed, and not even so because your gear ratio don’t change much. Ten speeds are harder to deal with in setting up because they tend to be more finicky.

Will 11 speed chain work with 10 speed?

As said above, the inside dimensions of a 10-speed and 11-speed chain are virtually identical, so there’s no problem running an 11-speed chain on 10-speed cogs.

Can I use 11 speed crankset with 10 speed chain?

An 11-speed crank will perform equally well on a 10-speed system. No one has shown that there is any difference in ring spacing. The chains have the same internal width, so don’t know the difference.

Are all 9 speed cassettes compatible?

In some cases, it is possible to run a cassette from a different brand than the rest of your drivetrain. SRAM and Shimano cassettes, on either road or mountain bike, are interchangeable with each other as the spacing is the same between the sprockets.

Are 10 speed and 11 speed chains the same?

Since 10 and 11 speed chains are almost the same width, as well as cassette teeth, 10 speed chain can be used in stead of 11 speed one, without it jamming between the sprockets. However, this will still not work perfectly and will cause premature sprocket wear, so better to avoid it.

What is the difference between 10 speed and 11-speed?

10 speed chains are slightly different from 11 speed. 10 speed chainrings are slightly different from 11 speed, but in most cases, you can simply swap out the chainrings instead of buying a whole new crankset. Some rear hub cassette bodies are only designed to accomodate up to a 10 speed cassette.

What size chain do I need for 10 speed?

Bike Chain Size Chart

Drivetrain* External Width, in Internal Width, in
9 speed 1/4″ – 9/32″ 11/128″
10 speed 1/4″ – 9/32″ 11/128″
10 speed narrow 7/32″ 11/128″
11 speed 7/32″ 11/128″

Are 10 speed and 11-speed chains the same?

Are 10 speed and 11-speed chainrings the same?

The spacing between 11-speed chainring teeth centers is not narrower than on 10-speed chainrings. In some cases, it is even a bit wider on 11-speed. So your system will perform pretty much the same as it does now if you were to replace your 10-speed chainrings with 11-speed ones.

What’s the difference between a 9 speed and a 10 speed chain?

The thickness of modern 9 and 10-speed chainrings is about 2mm. The internal/roller width of 9 and 10-speed chains is the same – 2.18mm. The only difference is the spacing of the chainrings. 9 and 10-speed chainrings aren’t spaced the same way, but the differences aren’t humongous.

Can a 10s chain shift on a 9s sprocket?

It boils down to it being likely that due to some variability between chain and sprocket tolerances that there appears to be a small chance that a 10s chain will not shift well on a 9s sprocket. However, there may be a small fraction of 9s chains that will not work well on a 9s sprocket.

How big is a 9 speed SRAM cassette?

Cassette Characteristics Brand & Number of Speeds Cassette Width Spacer Width SRAM 8-speed (MTB) 35.4mm 3mm Shimano 9-speed (MTB) 36.5mm 2.56mm SRAM 9-speed (MTB) 36.5mm 2.54mm Shimano 10-speed (MTB) 37.2mm 2.35mm

Can you run a 10sp chain on a 9spd drivetrain?

Arizona! You can run a 10sp chain on 9sp set up, its not recommended but yes it will work. Our KMC x10sl-Ti chains are +/- 241g at 112 links and the KMC x9sl-Ti is +/- 265g at 116 links. I have yet to try a 10sp chain on the 9sp drivetrain but I think Ill be putting on the new KMC x10SL-DLC chain on the bike.
