Is it hard to rebuild a differential?
A complete rear differential replacement includes replacing the housing, gears, bearings, and seals. The average time it takes a certified mechanic to perform a differential rebuild at a shop is usually three to five hours. A rebuild on a commercial vehicle by someone without prior experience could take much longer.
Does E46 M3 have limited slip differential?
E46 M3 Limited Slip Options Torque transfer happens instantly and it doesn’t need to sense a spinning wheel first. Lock-up is quicker and smoother and it’s less affected by heat than a clutch. The BMW M Variable viscous diff uses plates and heavy fluid to transfer torque between axles.

If caught early enough, before damage is done, the axles can be rebuilt. There are many suppliers that rebuild these axles, often available through your local auto parts store. If your old axles are badly damaged the rebuilder may not take them as a core replacement, meaning you’re out that money.

Another way to tell the difference between an 8.2 and an 8.5 rearend is to pull the cover and look at the bolt holding the spider gear crosspin. If it takes a 1/2-inch wrench to remove it, it’s an 8.2. If it takes a 5/16-inch wrench to remove it, it’s an 8.5.
Do all E46 have subframe issues?
