Sanitizing the emptied EarthBox® system with a bleach/water solution is recommended. Along with winterizing your EarthBox® garden, you may also want to take the time to spruce up your patio, deck, or plant stands, as needed.
Can you reuse soil with roots in it?
It’s generally fine to reuse potting soil if whatever you were growing in it was healthy. First, remove any roots, grubs, leaves and other debris from the old potting soil.
Can I put old potting soil in my compost?
Compost It. Old potting soil can easily be added to a compost pile, though any small, white pieces of perlite will remain, even after the compost is finished. I’m careful to ensure my compost pile has a good mixture of ingredients to help it decompose at a good clip and create a balanced compost.

Varies greatly, only needs watering through the tube when reservoir is dry. For example, A full grown tomato plant needs watering once a day. Young starter plants every 1-2 weeks. Once water is flowing from the overflow hole you stop watering, therefore you can’t overwater just underwater.
Is calcium nitrate good for tomato plants?
Calcium Nitrate Fertilizer works great on tomatoes and peppers to reduce blossom end rot. It also helps to prevent tip burn in lettuce and rust spot in potatoes, both of which result from calcium deficiencies. Adequate calcium levels help to reduce stem rot in broccoli plants, allowing for larger heads.

Adding 1 pound of Dolomite to the growing media before planting (as in the instructions) can help prevent BER from forming. In the event BER still presents itself, mix ¼ cup of hydrated lime or pickling lime with one gallon of water and add it to the reservoir the next time you fill your EarthBox with water.
How often should I fertilize my earthbox system?
With the EarthBox system you fertilize only one time per growing season; when you first set it up. Use just 2 cups dry, granular fertilizer for vegetables (3 cups if using organic fertilizer), and the plants will have just as much as they want, when they want it. You can’t over or under feed.
