What is realgar powder?
Realgar is a natural mineral of arsenic sulfide, usually described as orange red to orange yellow, and is designated as strong orange-yellow in Munsell notation 9.1YR 7.1/11.6. Realgar gets its name from the Arabic words for “powder of the mine” (rahj al ghar).

Where is realgar most commonly found?
It occurs in association with orpiment, arsenolite, calcite and barite. It is found with lead, silver and gold ores in Hungary, Bohemia and Saxony. In the US it occurs notably in Mercur, Utah; Manhattan, Nevada; and in the geyser deposits of Yellowstone National Park.
Is realgar toxic?
Realgar can cause kidney toxicity or/and liver toxicity after administration for over 30, 60 or 90 days respectively. The kidney was more sensitive to realgar than liver.
Is realgar safe to handle?
Realgar contains a significant amount of poisonous arsenic, and is itself somewhat toxic. Washing hands is recommended after handling Realgar specimens, especially if they are powdery.
Can you touch Cinnabar?
If you touch cinnabar – it’s safe. Cinnabar is extremely hard to dissolve in water (it will dissolve, but this takes many years). Low solubility of many Hg and Pb compounds is an important factor in treating these elements as poisons.
