What is Sassone score?
SASSONE Scoring, devised by AM Sassone, is a scoring system that uses traditional gray scale ultra- sound to characterize ovarian lesion and composed of four variables such as inner wall structure, wall thickness, septum and echogenicity.
What is a Septated ovarian cyst?
Pathologic cysts sometimes develop tissue partitions ( called septations) so that on ultrasound one can see many different fluid compartments. Also pathologic cysts may develop tissue growths into the cyst, so the wall is not smooth, and these are called “excrescences”.
What is a papillary projection?
Presence or absence of an echogenic structure against the wall of the cyst suggesting a papillary projection. A papillary projection was defined on ultrasound as a focal echoic structure against the inner or outer wall or septum or protruding inside a cystic portion or outside a mass.
What are the characteristics of a malignant ovarian cyst?
Malignant ovarian tumors tend to have papillary excrescences, irregular walls, and/or thick septations. The tumor can contain echogenic material arising from mucin or protein debris. The more solid the areas are, the greater the likelihood that a tumor is present.
Where is the adnexal mass located?
Adnexal masses occur near the uterus, usually in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or connecting tissues. These growths can originate from either the reproductive system or nearby pelvic organs, such as the intestines or the urinary bladder.
How is RMI calculated?
RMI is a tool used for ovarian cancer detection. It combines three pre-surgical features: serum CA125 (CA125), menopausal status (M) and ultrasound score (U). The formula is RMI = U x M x CA125.
Should I be worried about a Septated ovarian cyst?
Conclusions: Septated cystic ovarian tumors without solid areas or papillary projections have a low risk of malignancy and can be followed sonographically without surgery.
What percent of ovarian cysts are cancerous?
Five to 10 percent of women need surgery to remove an ovarian cyst. Thirteen to 21 percent of these cysts turn out to be cancerous. You may need the cyst removed if it’s growing too large, is painful, or is causing some other problem.
Is 3 cm big for an ovarian cyst?
An ovarian cyst is a larger fluid-filled sac (more than 3 cm in diameter) that develops on or in an ovary. A cyst can vary in size from a few centimetres to the size of a large melon.
Can adnexal mass be cured?
The majority of adnexal masses aren’t harmful. They won’t require treatment unless a woman is experiencing uncomfortable symptoms. Many adnexal masses will resolve themselves without any intervention. In a very small number of cases, the cause of the adnexal mass will be ovarian cancer.
